We know only too well that a kitchen is often the room that sells a house. It’s the room that we often spend the most time in (when we aren’t asleep).  A kitchen is not just a place to cook and eat, it’s an area of socialisation, a place where the children do their homework, a relaxing place to have your morning cuppa and read the paper.

Everyone has an idea of their ideal kitchen, from country kitchens with a large family dining table to a contemporary design with space for a kitchen island, when it comes to undertaking a complete renovation or a small upgrade, a kitchen project can be costly.  Therefore if you are looking to design your dream kitchen or update it with a view to selling your home, it pays to do some research before you commit.

In this latest blog we look at what’s trending in kitchens in 2023 before you make any decisions.  From bold colours to sustainable design choices, 2023 will see a variety of trends that will suit everyone’s taste and budget.

  • Bold and unique.  This year, the trend for colours is going to be bold. From emerald green cabinetry to bright pink splashbacks, bold and bright colours are a big trend this year.
  • Be creative with textures. A textured finish can bring warmth, depth, and interest to a kitchen. Try using wood panelling on walls – or even as splashbacks, textured doors with heavy wood grains, or reeded glass in wall cupboards.
  • Matching backsplashes with worktops. Many kitchen suppliers will be able to supply a variety of laminated worktops with matching splashbacks, however, if you really want to make a statement, use stone, granite or marble designs which create a seamless look for both the worktop and splashback – you can even take it one step further and go for a waterfall edge on your breakfast bar or island.
  • Mixed Metals. Pop into any kitchen retailer and you will see a variety of metals on display, from kitchen taps to cabinet handles.  There is a range of finishes to suit every taste – brass, nickel, brushed chrome, copper, stainless steel… the list goes on.  Try combining different metal finishes such as brass handles and a stainless-steel extractor hood or nickel handles on your base cabinets and copper on your wall cabinets.
  • Butcher block islands. These multipurpose islands are available in a range of options – from permanent cabinets/appliances with a butcher’s block worktop to a small butcher’s block/storage unit on wheels that can be positioned to suit your needs.
  • Swap out base cabinets for drawers. How many times have you bemoaned the fact that you are not able to see what’s stored at the back of your kitchen cupboards. Drawer units enable you to see everything that’s stored, without having to get down on your knees and empty half of your cupboard.  Most, if not all, kitchen companies have the option of two drawer units in a range of sizes up to 1,000cm.  Drawers provide a streamlined look, especially if you choose an integrated handle design.
  • Statement backsplashes. Backsplashes are no longer for just behind your hob. Available in toughened glass, MDF, acrylic, stainless steel, and alloy, they are available in any size, colour and finish – some suppliers even offer the option of having your own image printed.  From bright pink flowers to marble-effect in turquoises, blues and golds, there’s so much choice.
  • Larder and breakfast cupboards. With built in shelves, drawers and spice racks, the modern-day larder cupboard is perfect for storing all your ingredients and even small electricals. An increasing trend is for breakfast cupboards – much like a larder cupboard but an area to keep all of your cereal, toasters, coffee machines etc. so you can prepare your breakfast in one area. Once breakfast is over, the doors can be closed, and your worktop remains clutter-free.
  • Concealed butler’s pantries. Imagine a row of larder cupboards, but behind one of the larder doors is the entrance to a pantry. The concealed butler pantry is a must have on many home accounts on Instagram!
  • Freestanding units. From complete kitchens to a freestanding butcher’s trolley that can be moved into place when you need it, freestanding units are ideal for those that want a traditional look to their kitchen. Freestanding units can be painted in the colour of your choice.
  • Open shelving. From modern, floating shelves to reclaimed scaffolding boards with iron brackets, there’s so many options for shelving. Perfect for those that like their kitchen items on display.

Many of the above trends do not have to cost the earth – a few cosmetic changes can make the world of difference. You can save time and money just by replacing the doors, handles or even adding a statement backsplash – giving your kitchen a whole new lease of life.
